Addiction Takes Many Forms

"Set you minds on things above, not on earthly things." ~Colossians 3:2 Every week I get an alert from my phone asking me if I'd like to view my phone usage report.  I always ignore it.  It's one of those annoying features that I'd shut off if I knew how, and it's not quite annoying enough to figure out how.   But I looked at it a few weeks ago.  I was stunned! I could not believe how many hours A DAY I was spending on my phone!  Four hours!  That's 28 hours a week!  The other stat that surprised me was how many times a day I pick the phone up and look at it.  And the report showed me what I was doing on my phone and for how long.  I guess it shouldn't be surprising.  We use our phones for everything from calls, to emails, to texts, to social media and entertainment.  We play games.  Most people grab that phone and look at it whenever they have a spare moment.  We just can't be bored for one second anymore.  Even...

Who Sets The Standard In Your Life?

"Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth." Colossians 3:2 I heard a politician say this week, "I don't let my religious beliefs interfere with my decision making."  And while it's not my place to judge the faith of another, I have to wonder how a believer's beliefs could possibly NOT influence their decision making.  Isn't that the entire point of faith?  That we live a certain way and believe a certain way based on God's values?  Values that are very much in contrast with the fallen world we live in? We see this a lot these days--this is a question often asked in confirmation hearings.  I think it's an inappropriate question myself, but it is commonly asked.  You could certainly never ask that question in the private sector when you're hiring an employee--there's laws that say you absolutely can not do that.  Why our elected officials feel it's appropriate to get into somebody's religious beli...

Changing Your Focus Changes Your Attitude

"And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him." ~Colossians 3:17 I don't know if it is your experience or not, but I have noted many times that if I start the day off on the wrong foot I'm usually out of step all day.  It's usually a small thing.  The lid comes off my coffee cup and I spill it all over my shirt. I forget something at home. It's always something small and insignificant that gets me rolling downhill and before very long I'm in a mood.   Once you get a mood, you ever notice you just can't see anything good.  Somebody brings in donuts and you're annoyed because you're not supposed to eat donuts.  Somebody says they like your shirt, and you think they either want something or they're being sarcastic. I finally figured out a way to to stop that once it gets started.  I just take a few minutes, I open up my bullet journal, turn to a clean page, and ...
