How Strong Is Your Faith?

"He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken."

~Psalm 62:6

I talked a little bit last Sunday about how sometimes we tend to compartmentalize our life.  We have our faith life, and then we have our regular life.  But our faith should play a role in all aspects of our life.  It should be the foundation of our life, not an aspect of it.

But in a world of constant uncertainty, many of us struggle with spiritual doubts. We question God's presence, His goodness, or His plan, and we fall back into depending more upon ourselves than God. But this psalm confronts us with a bold declaration--not a suggestion, but a statement of unshakable truth.

When you look at this psalm, note that David doesn't say God is like a rock or similar to a fortress. He states with absolute certainty: He ONLY is my rock (emphasis is mine).  When David wrote these words, he wasn't lounging around the palace in comfort and excess. He was likely fleeing from enemies-- possibly his own son Absalom. But in his darkest hour, David didn't merely hope God was reliable-- he planted his feet firmly on this absolute truth. The Hebrew word for "shaken" here means to slip, fall, or be overthrown. David is saying, "Because God is my foundation, no circumstance, no enemy, and no doubt can topple me."

Your doubts may be loud, but God's truth is stronger.

So how do we stand against these doubts?

  1. Acknowledge your doubts honestly before God-- God is big enough to handle your questions and your doubts.
  2. Anchor yourself in what you know to be true about God's character, not what you feel in the moment.
  3. Surround yourself with believers who will speak truth when your own faith wavers.
  4. And finally, take those steps in faith even when you're in doubt. Like I preached on Sunday, sometimes we have to take the step first, knowing in faith that God will guide all our steps to follow.

Make a decision today to be like David, and plant your feet firmly on the unmovable rock of God's character and promises. Spiritual doubt isn't overcome in a moment but through daily choices to trust in God.  The same God who was David's rock is your rock today. He hasn't changed, and He won't fail you now. Choose today to declare with conviction: "He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken."
