Every Moment Counts . . .
~Romans 12:21
We have control over very little in our lives. We spend a great deal of time fretting over matters that we have no control over. We worry about what other people think about us. We worry about the future. We regret things from the past.
What if we just focused on what we DO have control over? Wouldn't we be a lot happier?
We have no ability to change what has already happened in our lives. The past is beyond our influence. And what we see of the future is fiction, because there's no way way for us to know what the future brings.
The only thing we have completely under our control is the moment we're in. What if we focused on that moment? On this day. On the decisions before us right now? Change happens when we make different decisions. And all that we control is our actions and attitudes right now.
What if we decided right this minute that we were going to make better decisions? That we were going to make every decision based on the tenants of our faith?
How significant of a change would that be? What if we took a good look at each thing we do to make sure it's consistent with what we believe? What if we discarded every thing that we do that isn't consistent with what we believe?
And you can do that! You have complete control over what you do, and what you don't do. And if you make it your goal in life to be consistent in your faith and let it guide you towards everything good and away from everything that isn't, you may be surprised at just what an incredible change that will bring.
How many of the things you worry about, and regret, and fuss over will simply vanish if you shift your focus on what you're doing right now? The decisions you're making right now? The choices you're making right now? The actions you're taking right now? How many problems would that solve in your life if you boiled everything in your life down to either being consistent with what you believe therefore good, or inconsistent with your faith, therefore bad?
When our definition of a successful life is being a good person, and that is the rule and guide of our daily life and our actions and our decisions, we will be much happier people. That's the way God made us. Sometimes we forget that we have complete control in doing the right things, and avoiding the wrong things.
Sometimes we make things too hard.
