Homer Lodge No. 199: A Success Story

Most Worshipful Grand Master of Illinois Anthony R. Cracco and Worshipful Master of Homer Lodge No. 199 Todd E. Creason
I wrote a series of articles called Bringing Back The Light for the Midnight Freemasons that talked about the work the Brethren of Homer Lodge No. 199 (IL) had been doing--work to save an old Lodge with a 160 year history in the community.  This Lodge was very near the point of closure three years ago.  But after a lot of hard work, not only has the building been repaired and restored to its former glory, but Homer Lodge is adding new members.  Even the Royal Arch has returned as well with a brand new chapter--Admiration Chapter.

Grand Chapter and Admiration Chapter Officers served as Symbol Bearers during Rededication*
This weekend the Grand Master of Illinois, Anthony R. Cracco and the officers of the Grand Lodge of Illinois A.F. & A.M. came to Homer Lodge No. 199 and rededicated the Lodge.  And the Royal Arch was in attendance as well.  Officers from Homer Lodge's new chapter, Admiration Chapter, and two Grand Chapter Officers served as standard bearers.  The Grand Master couldn't have been more impressed with what had been accomplished by the Lodge, and said so repeatedly during his remarks.  It's a great success story--and of course, it's only the beginning of the story.  Homer Lodge is just getting started.
There's a bigger story here--these old Lodges can be restored.  I've been saying this for years as I watch one Lodge after another close and merge with another.  These Lodges can be brought back.  It just takes time, it takes effort, and it takes a willingness from the Brethren of that Lodge to do it.  Once the light of Freemasonry goes out in a community . . . it never comes back.  And there has never been a time in our history when the world was more in need of men of good character than right now.

~Todd E. Creason

*Symbol Bearers left to right were PMEGHP of Illinois William J. Hussey, PMEGHP of Illinois Sean P. McBride, EHP of Admiration Chapter Mike Dooley, and Scribe of Admiration Chapter Brian Pettice.
